TKL news, photos and celebrations
Austin passes his qualifying exam in Bioengineering!
Congratulations to Austin for passing his qualifying exam and advancing to PhD candidacy in Bioengineering!
TKL secures first NIH R01 grant!
We're thrilled to announce that TKL has been awarded our first NIH R01 grant! This five-year project aims to develop a platform for drug susceptibility testing in tuberculosis. By leveraging novel probes based on the sugar trehalose, our approach will enable phenotypic, drug-agnostic, rapid, and low-complexity testing, paving the way for improved treatment strategies. Congratulations to everyone in the lab for this incredible achievement!
Welcoming new faces to TKL
We're excited to welcome new members to TKL! Ashvi Jain and Asma Kumar have officially joined our lab, and MBI PhD student Tanya Ivanov joins us for a fall rotation.
Destiny and Esmeralda join TKL
MBI PhD student Esmeralda Mendoza joins TKL for a Competitive Edge rotation during the summer. Undergraduate lab assistant Destiny Garcia also joins. Welcome!
Manvel Yelanyan joins TKL
TKL welcomes Bioengineering Masters student Manvel Yelanyan to the lab!
TKL members attend the 2024 UC System-wide Bioengineering Symposium.
The TKL lab attends the 2024 UC System-wide Bioengineering Symposium in San Diego, organized by the Bioengineering Institute of California (BIC). Lilith, Cara, and YongJin give poster presentations.
Congrats to TKL graduates: Shivani and Adriann!
Congratulations to Shivani on earning your Master's in Bioengineering and to Adriann on earning your Bachelor's in Bioengineering! Well done to both of you!
Lilith passes her qualifying exam in Chemistry!
Congratulations to Lilith for passing her qualifying exam and advancing to PhD candidacy in Chemistry!
Lilith is accepted into the CBI training program.
The Chemistry-Biology Interface (CBI) Predoctoral Research Training Program at UCLA is an NIH-funded program designed to provide research training to predoctoral students in chemical approaches to the solution of biological problems. Students selected to participate are trained in the language and techniques of biological and chemical sciences, and gain experience in solving complex issues in the realms of chemistry, pharmacology, and the medical sciences. Congrats Lilith!
Cara is accepted into the UC LEADS program.
The UC LEADS program prepares promising undergraduate students for advanced education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Once chosen as UC LEADS scholars, the students embark upon a program of scientific research and graduate school preparation. Scholars are provided with an excellent opportunity to explore their discipline, experience a research environment, and improve their opportunities for future study in their chosen field. Congratulations Cara!
TKL members attend the annual Bioengineering Research Day.
The TKL lab attends the UCLA Bioengineering Annual Research Day. Adriann, Amelia, and Cara present poster presentations. Congratulations to Cara for winning a best poster presentation award!
TKL members attend the 2023 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Scientists (ABRCMS).
Congratulations to Adriann and Amelia for winning best poster presentation awards !
TKL is awarded Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenges funding.
The lab will collaborate with the Myhrvold Lab (Princeton University) to develop CRISPR-based assays to rapidly detect multiple drug resistance mutations in Plasmodium falciparum and Mycobacterium tuberculosis for malaria and tuberculosis (TB) surveillance, respectively.
